Coverage Guides

Explore coverage terms, exclusions, limits, and questions to verify with a licensed provider.

Start with the loss you want to understand

A policy contains different coverages for different losses. Before comparing coverage names, ask whose injury or property damage is involved, what caused it, and which protection appears in your documents.

The NAIC's auto insurance buying guidance distinguishes liability, vehicle and injury protections. Availability and benefits depend on the state and policy.

Your questionCoverage to examineBoundary to check
Did a covered driver injure someone else or damage their property?Bodily injury and property damage liabilitySeparate from protection for your own injuries or car.
Was your insured car damaged in a collision?CollisionRead its deductible and coverage conditions.
Was your insured car stolen or damaged by another covered cause?ComprehensiveThe name does not mean every loss is covered.
Are there eligible injury expenses for covered people?Medical payments or personal injury protectionState rules, eligible expenses and benefits vary.
Did a driver without sufficient insurance cause an eligible loss?Uninsured or underinsured motoristCheck injury and property protections separately.

Use your documents as a worksheet

  1. Locate the declarations page: note the vehicles, drivers, policy dates, coverages, limits and deductibles.
  2. Read the policy form and endorsements together. A summary is not the full set of coverage terms.
  3. Write down a loss you want to understand, then ask the insurer which coverage and exclusions apply.
  4. Keep the same limits, deductibles and policy period when comparing alternatives.

TDI's declarations-page explanation helps distinguish a summary from the policy wording. It is a Texas regulator resource; this worksheet does not turn Texas rules into national requirements.

Explore with your own values and questions

The deductible calculator compares user-supplied premium and deductible scenarios. The coverage needs checklist organizes questions to discuss with an insurer. Neither tool decides whether a claim is covered or chooses your insurance limits.

The guide listing is limited to reviewed, published and discoverable articles. Additional coverage topics stay in preparation until their guides are available.
